The United States presidential election of 1972 was the 37th election. The election was between Richard Nixon a Republican, and George McGovern a Democrat. Later on Nixon was re-elected as the 37th president. Nixon accomplished many things in his time as president. Some things he accomplished was ending American fighting in Vietnam, and improving international relationships with U.S.S.R. and China. Later on he resigned his presidency being the first president yet to resign. He resigned because of the Watergate scandal of 1972. The Watergate scandal involved five burglars trying to wiretap phones, and steal secret documents. They were arrested but Nixon still resigned. President Nixon was a president that worked hard to get his work done. When Nixon resigned many people were suspicious because the people that were part of the Watergate scandal were part of his election.
