Movies of the 2000's
|
Looking at the most popular movies of the 2000's on IMDb, I see many trends. First off all, there are many continuations from previous decades, such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Also, many are based off books or comic books, such as the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series, and the many Marvel and DC Universe movies. We also see many remakes and continuations of older movies, like James Bond. I can see how many people born in eras before this decade believe movies have gotten worse, as very few good original movies are have been made since the late 90's, and Hollywood has made lots of money off remakes and sequels.

21st century TVMovies had been around for a while, but TV shows only had become popular in the '90's, so there was a lot of room for TV to expand and grow. Looking at the top TV shows of the decade, trends are sparse, and variety is apparent. Today, people will watch and enjoy a wide variety of TV shows in all topics and genres. What people want is good, entertaining, weekly drama. This comes in all forms, ranging from completely fictional fantasy shows to realistic dramas to reality TV. The very most popular are the high production quality dramas, such as Castle and Whitecollar. Very few sitcoms and cartoons were high on the list, and the very few include the Simpsons and Modern Family, which provide simple, humorous entertainment, but nothing on the emotional or moral scale. It is harder for viewers to connect with shows like these, since they aren't like real life at all. Overall, TV seems to have become a bigger source of quality entertainment in the past decade, replacing what movies gave people in earlier decades.

2000's musicFor this topic, I interviewed my sister, who is very into music of the 21st century, often from before 2010. Looking at Billboard's list of No. 1 songs up to 2009, we see that music has also become a place in America for artists to express themselves. There is no exact style, simply called "pop music", and what you hear on the radio is whatever is popular at the time. A lot of pop-rock bands got started in the 2000's, such as Coldplay, OneRepublic, and Maroon 5. We also see many solo artists emerge, working with professionals to show off their talent. Electronic and rap music becomes popular to a degree, but more traditional styles of music with modern-day themes are heard too. Overall, radio/popular music is peppy, has a repeated chorus, and has little emotional meaning. They are sing-along songs that everyone knows, produced or sung by famous artists. My sister is a huge fan of music from the earlier 2000's, and she feels that music has progressively gotten worse throughout this decade because it has lost meaning and has become about making catchy songs to make money. She enjoys songs form before 2010 much more than songs coming out now.

Songs from the early 2000's vs today Interview
I interviewed my sister Margaret on music of the early 2000's through today, as she is huge into the music and enjoys the music of this century.
What are some themes you remember about music in the earlier 2000’s?
-Emo music was pretty popular, raps died down since then, less electronic music.
How has music progressed/changed since then?
-EDM has become more popular, remixes, and songs featuring other artists.
In one word, how would you define today’s music? Explain.
-Peppy. Because I feel people are trying to get on the radio by writing catchy songs without meaning.
Why do you think the music we hear on the radio is widely popular in the US? What makes it appealing to people?
-People like to dance and know the lyrics of a song so they can sing along. It lifts their spirits.
Overall, do you think music has gotten better or worse? What makes it so?
-Worse. Emo music has died out, as well as any songs with meaning.
Do you think people are still talented singers, even if they use auto tune?
-Yes, I think they have talent, but they are afraid people will judge them for their voice.
